MENOPAUSE AND ACUPUNCTURE

Menopause is a part of the natural aging process marking the cessation of ovulation in a woman’s body. There are three stages of menopause namely: perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause. This time of change may last a few months to several years. During the period of the climacteric, a variety of symptoms may be experienced, which cause varying amounts of distress. Symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, fatigue, mood swings, memory loss, vaginal dryness, headaches, joint pain, and weight gain. Up to 25% of all menopausal women experience agonizing menopause signs and symptoms and thus require treatment. It is worth noting that every woman experiences menopause differently, not everyone experiences all the symptoms. For those who are experiencing menopause symptoms, especially if you notice that you have clusters of symptoms, you need to visit with your doctor, as many of your organs depend on the proper levels of hormones to function at full capability. This is a time to be gentle with yourself and rebuild your energy reserves.

There are several methods of treatment that claim to make these symptoms less disruptive to your life. Conventional treatment is usually hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which is considered to be effective in treating the symptoms, and may be prescribed for years. Some women find HRT effective, but others experience many distressing effects; some are advised against taking it or are unwilling to take it. Continuing distress caused by their symptoms prompts many women to seek help from acupuncture.

Acupuncture for menopause has been used for over 2000 years for the treatment of all menopausal symptoms. Acupuncture balances menopausal symptoms, by balancing hormones, reducing hot flushes, foggy mind, insomnia, and irritability. Acupuncture cannot stop or slow the onset of menopause. But it can address certain symptoms connected to menopause, for example:
acupuncture can limit the severity and occurrence of hot flashes, can help combat the side effects of a slowing metabolism, lead to an increased libido and a healthier hormone balance. It will improve your quality of life and inspire you to take a positive perspective on the changes happening in your life.

As with any treatment, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor first. Interestingly, nearly 30% of all patients presenting to acupuncturists are women aged 40-59.
